High bridge trail in Farmville VA.
This bridge was primarily a railroad bridge and is over 2400 feet long and over 100 feet above the appomattox river.
Built in 1853 this train bridge was built to cross the appomattox river. In the final days of the Civil War General Robert E Lee and his troops retreated across this bridge and then tried to burn it to slow the Union down. The bridge was saved and a few days later Lee surrendered.
